Dear Editors,

"China is poised to lead", you report in yesterday's NYT about China's booming automobile industry. But lead us where?

Our finite and vulnerable planet is already groaning under the drain and strain being placed upon it, yet you happily report on how this is set to increase several times over. Only it's not going to happen, because a ruthless mother Nature (who is already "warming up" for the job) will put a stop to it before it does.

The automobile industry is like a CANCER eating into the fabric of the biosphere. It is not the only cancer, of course (there are many other unsustainable industries), but it is probably the biggest and most important. Thus, if we were to recognise it for what it is, there might still be hope of a cure.

It's a shocking diagnosis, I know, but the prognosis depends entirely on whether we accept it, or remain in denial.
