Dear Editor,
When
DANNY HAKIM refers
to "America's
Love Affair With S.U.V.'s”
in today’s NYT he is using a
euphemism for “addiction
”. America
is, quite literally, addicted
– to S.U.Vs, to automobiles
in general, to a
growth-dependent economy, and
to a grossly materialistic,
completely unsustainable way
of life. The
injustice of it all is that it
probably won’t kill us, but
our children and coming
generations, who are
really going to LOVE us. When
is America (and the rest of
the world) going to come out
of denial about what we are
doing to our planet? Namely,
plundering it! When
it was pointed out to us more
than 30 years ago (you
remember the Club of Rome’s
“The Limits to Growth” ?),
instead of facing up to the
problem, we went into
collective denial. That is where we still are. But for how much longer? Human survival depends on the answer.
The reason that even you at the NYT are in denial is that the struggle for survival and advantage in the socio-economic environment blinds you too to reality (that's a lead you can follow up in previous letters I have sent you, or on my website).
