Dear Sir/Madam,

What is happening to the fishing industry today because the demands of sustainability - as always - have been subordinated to those of short-sighted politics and economics is just a foretaste and dire warning of what will happen in the years ahead on a much wider and more devastating scale if we continue to place greater demands on our planet’s resources and carrying capacity than it can sustain.

It provides an illuminating example of man’s schizophrenia: our breathtaking cleverness and our incredible stupidity.

All that will save us are radical and revolutionary changes to our economy and lifestyles, i.e. the values and aspirations on which they are based.

It’s a very tall order, I know. But it’s either that or extinction.
